Flag counter for GitHub README

GitHub Camo (important)

GitHub serves external README images through camo.githubusercontent.com. Those requests come from GitHub's US proxy IPs, so country flags on a GitHub-embedded counter usually collapse to the United States. We cannot recover the real visitor's country behind Camo.

The embed is still useful as a live badge and for pageview counts. Unique visitors are keyed by IP, so Camo/proxy IPs also affect how uniques accumulate. For meaningful country maps, use a direct embed (HTML site, Notion, forum) where the visitor's browser loads flagcounter.me/{code} without a privacy proxy. See the FAQ.

1. Create a counter

Open Create a flag counter, pick colors and layout, then create. Use Previewon the form (or the non-counting live preview on the stats page) so you don't inflate your own totals while editing. Save the one-time password (or sign in so the counter attaches to your account).

2. Copy the Markdown embed

After create (or on the counter's stats page), copy the Markdown snippet. It looks like:

Replace {code} with your public code if you're writing it by hand.

3. Paste into your README

Edit your GitHub profile README (username/username) or any repo README, paste the Markdown, and commit. GitHub will render the image through Camo on the next view.
